Trauma-Informed Toolkit: Interpersonal Effectiveness – Objective Effectiveness
Objective effectiveness refers to the goal or purpose of an interaction, in short it’s what you want out of a situation. The acronym D.E.A.R. M.A.N. will remind you how to clearly express your needs or desires. Describe the situation in concrete terms and without judgement. Express your feelings. Assert your wishes, clearly state what you do or do not want. Reinforce why the desired outcome is desired. Mindful; be mindful and in the present moment. Appear confident with a confident posture and tone while maintaining eye contact. Negotiate and give in order to get with the understanding both individuals have valid needs and feelings.
