Every child deserves to grow up feeling safe, supported and connected. The factors that lead to these feelings are called Positive Childhood Experiences, or PCEs: the nurturing moments, relationships and environments that allow children to build critical emotional skills. These factors can appear anywhere – at home, in school or within the community. No matter where they happen, they lay the foundation for lifelong well-being.
Resilient Lehigh Valley works to ensure that all children in the Lehigh Valley have access to these experiences. Through partnerships, programs and community initiatives, RLV provides the resources and guidance needed to create safe, supportive environments where youth can develop the skills and confidence to thrive.
PCEs help children develop the emotional strength and coping skills they need to navigate challenges throughout life. While they eliminate the effects of adversity, research shows that youth who experience multiple PCEs are better equipped to handle stress, navigate trauma and maintain mental and physical health into adulthood. RLV’s work focuses on fostering these experiences across families, schools, and communities.
At home, children benefit when they can freely express their feelings and know someone is listening. Feeling supported during difficult times, having an adult in the home who provides stability, and having caring adults beyond their caregivers, like teachers or coaches, all contribute to a child’s sense of security and resilience.

In school, PCEs are evident when students feel a sense of belonging and know they have peers and adults they can trust. Friendships and peer support strengthen confidence and encourage students to navigate social and academic challenges. Participation in school or community traditions further reinforces a sense of belonging, giving children the opportunity to feel connected to something larger than themselves.
The 7 PCEs and What They Look Like
- Talking with family about feelings: Children develop emotional intelligence when they’re encouraged to share their thoughts and emotions openly, which helps them process experiences and build coping skills.
- Feeling supported by family in difficult times: Knowing that adults will provide guidance, comfort and stability when challenges arise fosters a sense of security and optimism.
- Enjoying community traditions: A sense of community beyond the home and school is essential. Festivals, cultural celebrations and other traditions help students feel part of something larger.
- Feeling a sense of belonging in school: Inclusive classrooms, clubs and sports teams contribute to a child’s sense of academic motivation and pride in their school community.
- Feeling supported by friends: Friendships offer a unique kind of understanding and companionship that relieve stress and promote social well-being.
- Having at least two non-parent adults who genuinely care: Mentors, coaches, teachers and spiritual leaders can offer guidance and encouragement that complement family support, strengthening a child’s resilience and confidence.
- Feeling safe and protected by an adult in the home: A stable, caring home environment gives children the confidence to explore the world while knowing they have a safe home base to return to.
PCEs are not just “nice to have” – they are critical protective factors to help children thrive in the face of adversity. Youth with multiple PCEs are more likely to have better mental and physical health outcomes, higher academic achievement and stronger social connections. They also gain the skills and confidence to advocate for themselves and support others and are more likely to pass these experiences along to the next generation.
Through partnerships, programs and a focus on youth-led solutions, Resilient Lehigh Valley and United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley strive to ensure children have access to the relationships, environments and experiences they need to develop resilience and thrive in all areas of their lives.
