Hometown Heroes: Free books in kids’ hands mean more eyes on vulnerable children in the Lehigh Valley during coronavirus pandemic

Though it was hard to read his expression behind the mask he wore to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, 7-year-old Jasias Waters of Allentown did not appear to be having a “Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” when he selected that book about Alexander’s troubles from the table of free children’s books offered by Lehigh County Children & Youth caseworkers at Harrison-Morton Middle School this week.

The book giveaway, one of several the department coordinated with the Allentown School District during the district’s grab-and-go free lunch program, is just one method caseworkers are using to keep watch over children while schools are closed due to the pandemic …
